CAN I KEEP USING MY EXISTING WOODBURNING STOVES?

When the Ecodesign programme comes into force for stoves in the UK in January 2022 it does not mean you are unable to use your existing stove or that you have to replace it. This is because the Clean Air Strategy does not say there will be a ban on the use of existing wood or multi-fuel appliances, nor do you need to modify your appliance. However, you should be burning quality dry “Ready to Burn” wood or quality smokeless fuels. Kiln dried logs are the best to use as they have 20% or less moisture content.

You only need to see this diagram to see the difference of heat a log will produce with a low moisture content.

REMEMBER - You can’t burn water! The energy in your fire will be used to try to keep the wood burning instead of being converted into heat. Also, you will create heavy deposits that will coat your door glass and liner and shorten its life expectancy.
Dry wood is more cost effective. If in doubt buy one of our moisture meters and ensure the wood you burn is 20% moisture content or less. More information on green wood and wood types can be found here.

Please do get in touch if you have any questions with the information in this blog or if you would like to book a survey to arrange a stove installation or stove service. You can also see The Stove House' gallery and reviews here.
